Frequently Asked Questions

About the Concept

  1. What is a Sequential Optical Trigger (SOT)?
SOTs are static visual designs that create the illusion of movement or rhythm, engaging the viewer’s perception in a sequential, often calming or awakening way.

  2. Are SOTs just optical illusions?
No. While they may resemble illusions, SOTs are intentional visual tools—designed not to trick, but to invite interaction, rest, or perceptual anchoring.

  3. Do SOTs use animation or digital effects?
Nope. They rely entirely on how your brain interprets still patterns—nothing moves except your perception.

    4. Who created Sequential Optical Triggers?
YH created the first few in January 2025 when trying to make jpgs move. The Sovereigna team then helped develop application ideas and run trials with friends and family members of various ages.

Usage & Experience

  1. What am I supposed to feel when I look at a SOT?
There’s no “should.” Some people feel calm, others focused, others energized. SOTs meet you where you are.

  2. Do I need to understand how they work?
Not at all. SOTs work even without conscious analysis. You can just observe and let your body notice.

  3. How long should I look at one?
Start with a few seconds. Let your eyes soften. Some people gaze for minutes. Follow your breath, not the clock.

  4. Can I look at several in a row?
Yes, but the book is designed for slowness. Don’t binge. The pause between images is part of the experience.

  5. What if I don’t feel anything?
That’s okay. Perception changes with mood, lighting, even posture. Come back later—or move on without judgment.

Safety & Sensitivity

  1. Can SOTs trigger epilepsy?
It’s unlikely. SOTs are static, with no flicker. But sensitive viewers (especially with photosensitive epilepsy) should proceed gently, and always pause if discomfort arises.

  2. Are SOTs safe for children?
Generally yes—but adult guidance is recommended. Some patterns may be intense for developing vision systems.

  3. What if I have eye strain or fatigue?
We designed SOTs with this in mind. In fact, fewer illusions appear in the book specifically to reduce overstimulation.

  4. Can they help with ADHD or anxiety?
While not a clinical treatment, many users with ADHD or sensory sensitivity report that SOTs help them anchor focus or regulate overwhelm.

  5. Could SOTs help detect visual or perceptual sensitivities?
Potentially. Strong reactions (positive or negative) might reveal underlying sensitivities worth exploring with a professional.

Philosophy & Design

  1. Why are there fewer images than other art books?
Because less is healing. We prioritize depth over volume, and believe perception needs space to breathe.

  2. Why don’t the illusions have names?
So you can name them yourself. Interpretation is personal. The experience belongs to the viewer.

  3. Are these meant to be beautiful?
Not always. Some SOTs prioritize function over aesthetic beauty—and that, too, is part of the therapeutic experiment.

  4. Why don’t you include instructions with each illusion?
Because instructions limit perception. Each image is a non-verbal invitation, not a puzzle to solve.

Practical

  1. Can I print or frame a SOT?
Yes. High-quality versions may be printed for personal use or clinical testing. Just maintain the original scale and design integrity.

  2. Will staring at SOTs improve my vision?
They won’t “fix” vision, but they may help with visual focus, balance, and perceptual recalibration over time.

3. Is this a form of therapy?
Not clinically yet, as we are still in the early stages of discovery and testing. But it may be therapeutic. SOTs are not meant to replace professional care, but they may support it—through calm, clarity, and curiosity.
